The Tonga Visitors Bureau in Neiafu has the usual brochures and can answer questions. Take the time to peruse their information boards and other boards around Vava'u to find out what's on.
The Vava'u Public Library (Tues.-Fri. 1200-1700, Sat. 0830-1300) is in front of the post office.
The Westpac Bank, near the Tonga Visitors Bureau, the ANZ Bank, in the center of town, and the MBf Bank across the street from the ANZ change traveler's checks and have ATMs. Even though the banks are open on Saturday mornings, they may not change foreign currency that day. A five percent surcharge will be added every time you use your credit card. Western Union near Adventure Backpackers may offer better deals.
Officially, extensions of stay up to six months are available at the Immigration Office in the same building as the Development Bank opposite the Tonga Visitors Bureau. In practice, however, it's entirely up to the officers how long you'll get, and your attitude could have a lot to do with it.
There's a great view of Neiafu from Ngu Hospital on the northwest side of town, but don't expect the same level of medical attention you'd receive in Australia or New Zealand. It's the only place in Vava'u where you can buy condoms.
