The top place to stay on 'Eua is budget-priced Hideaway Resort, on the muddy coastal road below Futu, a half hour walk south of 'Ononua Wharf. If offers six rooms with bath in a long wooden motel-style building facing the sea plus two bungalows. There's hot water in the motel rooms only. Camping is possible. A light breakfast is included but a cooked breakfast costs extra. Their restaurant serves a good dinner. You can observe the sunset from their terrace, and even whales in season. The undertow here is deadly on an outgoing tide. Four different hiking tours are offered, plus one island tour. Opinions about the tours vary and their four-hour island tour is more like two hours with lunch.
At Mata'afo village near Kaufana Airport and the turnoff to Hafu Pool is High Light Guest House. The four guest rooms sharing two bathrooms in a modern house are budget priced. Meals can be ordered and if you want to use the cooking facilities yourself there's an extra charge.
Susan's Guest House, in an old building next to the former Haukinima Bar in Futu, is rather depressing and can be noisy due to early morning ferry traffic and late night disco music. The eight rooms with shared bath might suit those on the lowest of budgets. Meals can be ordered.
Just south of Ha'atua village and 300 meters inland on Telefoni Road is budget-priced Taina's Place, also known as the Maxi's Scandic Motel. There are six small individual cabins with shared bath and camping is possible. A small daily fee is charged to use the common kitchen in the main house, or you can order breakfast and dinner. Tania's husband is the captain of one of the ferries from Nuku'alofa. Bicycle and horse rentals or tours can be arranged. It's a pleasant place to stay.
